The advent of internet changed the whole world. The internet is often called the “information superhighway”. Today, the internet is so vast that information on possibly every topic could be found. However, today, the internet serves a much powerful function - it enables people in any part of the world connect with the rest of the world. The internet is so… glorious. For example, a few decades ago, we used to get information on current affiars either from the newspapers or the radio, etc. etc. But today, information sharing has been revolutionized. One single person can network with millions of other people online and do anything. This freedom is so great. The internet is not censored or the information being distributed on it is not controlled by the Government or the companies. The internet represensts freedom and we, the users of the internet, must guard it. We should use and protect the internet at all times.

I have finally installed Linux. I requested an Ubuntu 9.04 CD from the Ubuntu Shipit Page, and I received it today. At first, I was thinking of installing gNewSense, but I don’t know how to install it without a CD writer or a pen drive. When the Ubuntu CD arrived, I decided to install it right away.

The interface seems a little different, but certainly not as intimidating as it was when I first tried my hand at Linux in 2007. My hands are paining a bit as I type, but that must be due to all the tests I wrote at school today.

Today, I’m a proud Linux user.

Have you ever wanted to learn Physics, not for the sake of grades, but for understanding the fundamentals of nature? I used to hunt for books on Physics too. But because I’m not familiar with many scientific phenomena and terms, and because many Physics books are filled with scientific terms and mathematical formulas, I often get frustrated as I cannot understand what is written in many Physics books. A few months ago, I came across an ebook called Motion Mountain. This free Physics textbook was written by Christoph Schiller. The text is beautifully written and easy to understand. As stated on the website, “The text is meant for students, teachers, and for anybody who is curious about the precise description of nature”. The ebook can be downloaded for free, both in parts or as a single PDF file.

If you want to learn Physics, then I suggest you read this text..

Thank you, Christoph, for writing such a beautiful text.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action …
Into that heaven of freedom, my father, let my country awake.

Buy a USB drive (preferably 16 GB) and store all my important files in it.

Install gNewSense or Ubuntu on my computer and get rid of Windows once and for all.

If possible, upgrade my system RAM to 1 GB.

Try to learn a few programming languages - XHTML, CSS, Python and C++. I’m not going to make a calendar on when I should start learning a particular language. Instead, I’ll first start with XHTML and CSS.

Learning XHTML and CSS: I’ll read a few books on the subject (I have HTML AND XHTML: The Definitive Guide, 6th Edition and HTML Dog : Best Practice Guide to XHTML and CSS), do a bit of coding and try to create a Wordpress theme or maybe help someone with their web page or code.

Messing with snakes and jewels: I don’t know anything about Python or Perl, so I’ll learn from the resources recommended by Eric. S. Raymond in his document How to become a Hacker.

C and C+: I know that C and C++ are very important languages, but are somewhat difficult to learn, so I’ll learn them later.

Learn more about open source software and participate in a few open source projects like Firefox and Ubuntu.

I have finally come to the conclusion that if I want to learn programming and help open source software community, I would have to switch over to Linux. So, I’m going to install Linux on my computer soon. I’m not new to Linux and open source software. I had previously installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my computer along with Windows XP. But, due to lack of space, I was forced to remove Ubuntu and use the space for storing my files. Then, I was very much enthusiastic about Linux and stuff like that thanks to an article called “How to become a Hacker” by Eric S Raymond.

So, now, I’m ready to install linux again and hopefully learn some programming or atleast learn how to use it. As for which distribution I’m going to use, I have decided to go for gNewSense which is derived from Ubuntu, and has the same features except for the fact that it has no non-free software.

As of now, I have only around 6 GB of free space left on my hard drive (I hope it will be enough). I most probably will have problems with the installation, but I’ll get through.
